This course is designed to provide engineers with a thorough understanding of motor and drive system components and methods to increase performance using a systems approach. The course details the content of the sourcebook for Improving Motor & Drive Systems, authored and developed by the United States Department of Energy. Part 1 of the course highlights the advantages of a “system approach”; compares and contrasts the application of AC and DC motors; discusses the drawbacks of both oversized and undersized motors; and outlines different types of motors and their advantages and disadvantages as well as the characteristics of motors.
